We have all taken a trip that changed our perspective on travel in ways we did not expect. For me, it was my trip to Northern Vietnam, with Hanoi as my first destination.
Right from day one, in the Old Quarter neighborhood, I immediately saw how unique the country is. I could not help but notice the city’s character and how it brims with ‘life’. By life, I mean the city is not only a commercial hub. You can feel tradition and culture even on a regular day. Even wandering around Old Quarter felt like an experience on its own.
To tell you the truth, that one day I spent in Old Quarter flipped my once naive belief about Southeast Asia. A belief that this region offers just the same kind of tropical escape.
All the same, it was a memorable experience and I hope to visit the city again. I plan to return because I only saw a part of Old Quarter and I want to see the rest.
Because of that, I’ve created a detailed map of Old Quarter. It highlights various interesting spots in the neighborhood. You’ll find not only the top attractions but also cafes, restaurants, and photo spots. I’m sure this will help me make the most of my next trip.

Hi reader! It’s Eljon, and before we continue, I want to welcome you to my blog, Explore to Thrive. If you haven’t read about my experience visiting Hanoi, I’d love for you to check it out. I talk about how amazing the city can be. Honestly, it’s an experience that makes me want to convince everyone to visit Hanoi at least once.
From that trip, I can share a couple of tips.
First, if possible, plan your visit on a weekend. Try to have at least one night in Hanoi, either Friday or Saturday.
Second, try the famous egg coffee. A lot of cafés serve it, but if you want to sip with a nice view, go to Coffee Club Café and Restaurant. It’s right at Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square. That is the square which feels like the Shibuya crossing of Hanoi, but motorbike edition.
Where to go next after Hanoi? I’d recommend Sapa and Ninh Binh.
Sapa is one of the top mountain towns in Northern Vietnam. Fansipan, the highest mountain in Indochina, is there. It was something I really looked forward to. We also had a relaxing stay, with panoramic views of the mountains from our hotel’s infinity pool.
Ninh Binh, though, is perfect for a day trip from Hanoi. It’s a less crowded alternative to Ha Long Bay, and the karst mountains are spectacular. You’ll love it.
