Crafting the perfect trip to Hanoi is complicated because the city is incredibly dense with things to do. If you look at my maps of Hanoi and the Old Quarter, you will see enough experiences to fill several days. When you add in all the nearby destinations reachable on a day trip, you quickly realize how easily a visit can turn into a much longer stay.
Let’s make the planning process easier for you right here.
Must Have
What is the one thing you absolutely cannot miss when you visit Hanoi?
During my stay, I spent hours wandering through the Old Quarter, and the unique character of the historic center struck me everywhere I looked. It feels truly Vietnamese. But as I walked, I started to feel like I was only reading the cover of a book. Have you ever had that feeling?
I realized my experience would have been so much richer if a local had been there to show me the way. Think about it. Beyond just the history of the buildings and temples, a guide shows you what is new in the area and reveals those hidden gems you would never find on a map. You get to see the city through their eyes.
So, what is the best way to experience it all? Join a guided walking tour. These tours are incredibly affordable and give you a massive amount of value for a small price.

Must Have Alternative
You might prefer a different way to see the city that puts the focus on its most famous sights and flavors. Why not choose a tour that centers on two of Hanoi’s most legendary icons?
Imagine standing on the world-famous Train Street, where locomotives pass incredibly close to the tiny cafe tables, and then sipping on an authentic egg coffee, a rich, creamy delicacy that tastes like a dream.
It allows you to check off two major bucket list items at the same time without any of the stress. It saves you the hassle of navigating the maze of narrow alleys on your own and gives you the history, the perfect photos, and the best flavors all in one go.
Isn’t that such a fantastic option? (Yes, of course!)

Forever Popular
Among the things I wish I had done differently during my trip, missing out on the Water Puppet show is definitely on the list. I didn’t realize what a unique experience it was until I saw a video of a performance after I had already left the city.
This is a 1,000-year-old folk art that you can see nowhere else in the world! What makes it truly fascinating is that the puppeteers actually stand waist-deep in water behind a screen, using hidden bamboo rods to make the puppets dance and splash across the surface. It is a beautiful, ancient spectacle that really captures the spirit of the city.
I realized too late how much of an overlook it was, so make sure you don’t make the same mistake while you are there.

Day Trips
If you have taken a look at my tourist map of Northern Vietnam, it is easy to see why so many travelers choose to stay in Hanoi for several days.
An incredible variety of cultural sites and natural wonders sit right outside the city limits. Many of these bucket-list destinations are only two or three hours away by bus, and they make Hanoi a strategic base for some of the most beautiful day trips in the country.
Are you planning to stay in the city for a few days to explore the surrounding area? Doing so is a brilliant move.
It means you never have to pack and unpack your bags every single morning. You completely skip the headache of constant hotel transfers. Most importantly, you get to experience the stunning beauty of the countryside and still return to the comfort of your favorite Hanoi dinner spot by nightfall.

Ninh Binh
Among the many kinds of day trips from Hanoi, we chose Ninh Binh for one solid reason. It is rare to find so many different types of experiences packed into only one day.
Imagine, you have the nature of the spectacular limestone karst mountains. These mountains provide the setting for your adventure, which is a boat ride on the rivers flowing right through them. Nestled within these same natural features, you will find the culture of the temples. Isn’t that amazing? A huge plus is the fact that the area feels much less touristy than other day trip destinations.
The thing is, our time there turned out truly unforgettable! If you want the same kind of fun we had, the day trips below offer that exact experience.

Ha Long Bay
While we ultimately chose Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay was the final contender that almost won our hearts.
It is easy to see why this iconic destination is so famous, as it feels like stepping directly into another world. Imagine standing on the deck of a boat as thousands of limestone karsts and islets rise sharply out of the deep emerald waters all around you.
Your journey becomes even more interesting when you discover that these massive formations hide prehistoric caverns and entire floating villages that have existed for generations. This otherworldly scenery is just the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.

Perfume Pagoda
While I was making my map, the Perfume Pagoda really caught my eye. I initially thought it was another typical temple, but I was surprised by how much you can actually experience there.
Much like Ninh Binh, it offers a great mix of adventure, culture, and nature. Depending on the tour you choose, you might start your day gliding on a bamboo boat along the Yen Stream as the scenic landscape passes you by.
From the water, you get to trek into the cool air of a massive cave and ride a cable car over the mountains. If you wish, you can even participate in a Buddhist prayer in one of the temples nestled there.

Top Hotels
One of the things I truly loved about Hanoi is how affordable and high quality the accommodations are.
You honestly do not need to spend more than 20 USD to find a decent place to stay, and if you increase your budget even slightly, you are already into a premium experience. I used Agoda for my own trip and managed to land a massive discount that still surprises me. I only paid 4 USD for a room that originally cost 18 USD!
