Before our 5-day trip to Central Visayas where we spent 4 days in South Cebu and 1 day in Bohol, I always considered myself a mountain person.
I loved being in high altitudes above the clouds because it felt like a peaceful escape from the stresses of daily life. The first time I saw the sea of clouds at Mount Pulag, I was convinced that no other natural sight could ever match that level of beauty and wonder.
But I proved myself wrong during our snorkeling tour at Moalboal and Pescador Island on the third day of the trip. That was the first time I witnessed a sardine run, the moments when I could hardly believe what I was seeing.
I never imagined that the same fish we eat from a can when we are too lazy to cook could form such an incredible natural spectacle in the ocean.
It took my breath away while I was holding it underwater.

Going for a snorkeling tour in Moalboal too?

Hi reader! It’s Eljon, and before we continue, I want to welcome you to my blog, Explore to Thrive. Here, I share my experiences with traveling, reflections on spirituality, personal growth and insights on building an online business, all to make a difference. But my mission goes beyond that. You can learn more about what I do by visiting my homepage.

If you are from North America or Europe, you might have witnessed a starling murmuration (a breathtaking natural display where thousands of birds fly in coordinated, fluid patterns across the evening sky).
A sardine run is the underwater equivalent where millions of fish move in massive shimmering shoals through the ocean.
And truly, it is an incredible experience. The photos just I showed you don’t do justice to how marvelous it is in person.
I mean, the world beneath the ocean surface is a completely different realm. I was surprised by how many colors I encountered.
The corals? You have to see the Blue Staghorn, Orange Sea Fans, and the dense layers of Table corals. For the fish, I definitely saw Clownfish like the character in Finding Nemo along with the colorful Mandarin fish and Parrotfish.
That said, the sardine run is what truly makes the experience feel magical.
Imagine millions of silver fish moving in perfect unison to create a living curtain that stretches across your entire field of vision.
And bruh, you have to see it when there’s sunlight because when the rays pierce the surface, the sardines shimmer like tiny blades. The deep blue ocean transforms into a brilliant display of light and constant motion.
Thanks to the snorkel the tour operator provided, I could keep my face in the water and watch the sea floor for a long time. Not kidding, I spent over ten minutes at a time marveled by the sardines. The only reason I had to lift my head was to clear the fog from my mask so I could see clearly again.
I mean, the scale and fluid choreography of the shoal are mesmerizing. You must see it when a diver approaches the shoal because the massive wall of fish reacts instantly, parting and swirling in a synchronized dance that mimics the movement of a single, giant organism.
I believe my eyes moistened in that moment, not because I had been wearing my goggles too long, but because I did not want to blink and miss a second of the sardines making another spectacle. Or, maybe tears of joy and wonder.
I also kept my face underwater for a long time because our guide mentioned we could see sea turtles swimming, particularly around Pescador Island. Unfortunately, I did not see a sea turtle when we snorkeled around the island. I saw one while we were near Panagsama Beach in Moalboal, but it was swimming very deep.
It would have been a beautiful experience if it at least went closer to the surface or swam through a shoal of sardines. That could have been a spectacular moment like a wall of glittering blades slowly opening as the sea turtle went nearby.
I traveled with my friends that day, and after the experience, we shared the same sentiment: we want more!
Yes, even though our tour lasted four hours, with three hours spent sightseeing underwater, we were not ready to leave.
In summary, we departed from the dock at 9:30 am and headed to Pescador Island to see the corals and stunning marine life before returning to Moalboal Panagsama Beach for the ultimate sardine run experience. The tour ended around 1 pm, right in time for lunch.
Similar to our time canyoneering at Kawasan Falls and swimming with whale sharks in Oslob, I really enjoyed our trip to Moalboal and Pescador Island.
As I noted earlier, seeing the sardine run was a transformative travel experience for me. That’s why it is now one of the top activities I suggest whenever people ask for recommendations on what to do in South Cebu.
Yes, I highly recommend this adventure even if you are a first timer or have no experience swimming or paddling.
In our experience, you plunge into the water and the guides take care of the navigation. They provide lifebuoys attached to a rope for everyone to grip. While we float securely in our life vests and hold onto the buoys, the guide pulls us across the waves toward the most beautiful snorkeling areas.
What surprised me was the incredible strength of our guide. We were a group of four holding onto the lifebuoy after our party of seven split into two teams and he pulled us entirely with his swimming skills.
However, we realized quickly that our weight might be too much for him to handle alone. So we agreed to paddle alongside him to help. If one of us felt tired, that person could hold the lifebuoy and enjoy the glide.
We also chose to help because we wanted to see more of the reef. We believed we could move faster and explore different areas if we helped our guide increase the speed.
If you have the skills, you can swim independently and explore the reef on your own. One of our friends is a skilled swimmer and chose to do that. But later on she got tired and joined us on the lifebuoy. Hehe.
With all this in mind, I recommend joining a tour if you are snorkeling in Moalboal for the first time. The guides are very helpful, especially when showing us the most stunning reefs. Finding the exact location of the sardine run was also quick with their assistance.
