Mountains and hiking trips aren’t the main reasons why people visit Cebu, but my friends and I included Osmeña Peak in our plans anyway.
For what reason? All the gorgeous views you get at the top!
Our Osmeña Peak Expectations
But yeah, most of us (in our travel group) just love the mountains and those sweeping nature views. And with Osmeña Peak being the highest point in Cebu, we absolutely had to include it in our travel plans. Honestly, I think that was the main reason we went.
Osmeña Peak is only 1013 meters (3320 feet) high, about a third of the height of Mount Pulag where I saw those heaven-on-earth views. But all the photos and videos on Instagram and YouTube made us wonder what it actually feels like to stand at the top, especially during sunrise.
Imagine being surrounded by these sharp, jagged limestone hills all glowing in gold with long shadows as the sun comes up. We knew it would be spectacular.

Another reason was that getting to Osmeña Peak was not a problem at all for everyone in our group.
When we were researching the trip, we read that the trail is incredibly easy for beginners. Someone on Reddit even mentioned the hike is like a total walk in the park. Because of that, the two of us new to hiking felt completely fine about going up to the peak.
On top of that, our plan of staying in Moalboal for our entire Cebu trip and renting a private car meant even getting to the jump-off site was not a problem. Also, Osmeña Peak wasn’t a detour at all from the main attractions (Kawasan Falls Canyoneering or whale shark watching in Oslob), so skipping it never even crossed our minds.
Our Reality in Osmeña Peak
Fast forward to the actual trip, everything went exactly according to plan. We stayed in Moalboal, rented a van, and headed to Osmeña Peak to watch the sunrise.
But, unfortunately, we did not see the sunrise that we expected. Instead of the rising sun turning the scenery into a golden breathtaking wonderland, thick clouds rolled in and touched us… literally.

And it did not only touch us. Actually, those clouds “loved” us so much they wrapped us in a thick hug almost all the time while we stayed at the peak. Total whiteout.
We barely caught a glimpse of the supposedly spectacular view of the rugged landscape from the summit. Even Zaragoza Island that makes the overlooking view from Osmeña Peak so iconic was completely hidden.

Out of the 30 minutes we spent waiting for the clouds to clear, we only got a quick glimpse of it for a couple of minutes.

Our expectation for Osmeña Peak definitely crashed hard against reality.
If you’re visiting Cebu and want to hit up Osmeña Peak, let me share a few tips (things we should have done way differently) so you don’t end up with the same fate.
Hi reader! It’s Eljon, and before we continue, I want to welcome you to my blog, Explore to Thrive. Here, I share my experiences with traveling, reflections on spirituality, personal growth and insights on building an online business, all to make a difference. But my mission goes beyond that. Best Time to Visit
For context, we hit Osmeña Peak on the morning of day four during our five-day Central Visayas trip. We spent the first day in Bohol, days two, three, and four exploring South Cebu, and wrapped up day five in Cebu City.
Our trip took place in mid-November, so it was no surprise that the skies didn’t clear up during our hike.
In case you did not know, it’s the rainy season in the Philippines from June to November. It does not rain or storm all the time, but there are definitely more clouds during these months, and that can make hiking Osmeña Peak less ideal.
The thing is, these clouds aren’t the ones that make a sunset or sunrise beautiful. They’re actual rain clouds hovering at lower elevations, right around the height of Osmeña peak.
That means if you encounter them during your hike, not only will you see nothing but a solid wall of fog, you can also expect heavy moisture or droplets in the air making your clothes damp like we experienced.
To be honest, we knew the weather would be unpredictable because our trip was in November, but the past couple of days before our hike gave us the impression that we’d get a nice view from Osmeña peak.
Especially during our Sardine Run snorkeling tour in Moalboal on day 3, the sky in Cebu was clear and sunny. That made us hope that there would be a clearing in Osmeña Peak.
Although the weather can be unpredictable during the rainy season, I am not suggesting to completely ditch visiting Cebu, Central Visayas, or the Philippines for that matter. The rainy season is the off peak season, which means you can enjoy other attractions with fewer crowds.
That’s one of the things we considered for our canyoneering activity at Kawasan Falls.
To get a higher chance of seeing a beautiful view from Osmeña peak, the best time to go is during the dry season. March and April are the best months, but then again, that’s when more tourists come to Cebu, so you should definitely manage your expectations.

Hiking Difficulty
Regarding the difficulty of the hike, we confirmed it is very easy. Between the jump off point to the summit, the hike is less than 1 kilometer. We managed to reach the highest point in 20 or 25 minutes.
If you’re like me who has hiked mountains and not peaks before and you want some challenge, you might like to try other places like Mount Kupapey in Mountain Province or Mount Pulag in Benguet.
Anyway, the hike downhill should have been quicker, but wet ground from the rain clouds made things slippery. We ended up taking the exact same amount of time as we did going up.

Lastly, even though the trail is rated easy, it is actually quite rocky and uneven with a few gradual inclines. Those small rocks that look like sturdy stepping stones can actually be loose.
You have to be careful. My friend actually slipped on those loose rocks at one point. Thankfully she was not hurt.
Where to Stay
If you are planning to catch the sunrise at Osmeña Peak during a multi-day trip around south Cebu, staying in Moalboal is a great choice. It is close to the registration area and the main jump-off site for the peak so it works as the perfect base for your adventure.
You will also be right next to Kawasan Falls for canyoneering in Badian, as well as the famous sardine run and beautiful beaches right in Moalboal. This means you get the convenience of exploring all the top locations without spending all your time traveling on the road.
In our experience, we only needed to leave our homestay two hours before sunrise to reach the summit in time.
Keep in mind, though, that travel time from Moalboal to the jump off site takes at least an hour if you are driving a vehicle with a strong engine and you know the mountain roads well. Going up can take a lot longer if you ride a tricycle or a motorbike. We actually passed a few of them on our way up.
How to Get There
As of this writing, there is no public transportation available to get to the jump off site for Osmeña Peak.
The only way to get there is to rent your own vehicle or hire a motorbike or a tricycle. If your plan is to catch the sunrise at the summit, renting a ride or hiring a tricycle to camp overnight are your best options.
Tricycles can usually be found waiting around the town center or public market in Dalaguete, which is the main town you pass through to get to the mountain. You can also hire them directly from your resort or the main tourism hub in Moalboal if you want to arrange a round-trip driver for the day.
From Cebu City, you can easily get to Dalaguete by heading to the Cebu South Bus Terminal. Once there, look for a bus bound for Oslob, Bato, or Santander, as all of these routes pass directly through the town of Dalaguete.
Alternatively, if you are not worried about catching the sunrise and prefer to visit the summit later in the day, booking a group tour is an excellent option. Traveling this way allows you to explore Osmeña Peak easily while saving money by sharing transportation costs with other travelers.
Many tour operators bundle the peak with popular nearby adventures like canyoneering at Kawasan Falls, snorkeling with the sardines in Moalboal, or swimming with whale sharks in Oslob.
This setup offers incredible value, especially for travelers based in Cebu City who are searching for an action-packed day trip.
Where to Next
Unless you are planning to camp overnight, hiking and sightseeing at Osmeña Peak only takes about one to two hours. The good news is that other major attractions are only one to two hours away.
During our trip, we headed to Oslob next to see the whale sharks and visit the Sumilon Island sandbar. We left the Osmeña Peak registration area around seven in the morning and arrived in Oslob before nine.
Conclusion
Because bad weather hit us during our Osmeña Peak hike, it is hard to say whether the trip is worth it or not.
My advice is to have a backup plan or choose another destination if you are traveling during the rainy season. Mountain weather is highly unpredictable, and heavy rain can completely ruin the views.
Either way, at the end of the day, focusing on the beach or water activities in Cebu is the way to go. Osmeña Peak is only worth adding to your itinerary if you love the mountains and breathtaking views, or if you are staying in Cebu for a few weeks and want a change of pace from the main coastal highlights.
Enjoy your Cebu trip!
