How We Spent One Day in Cebu City Exploring Its Iconic Spots and Panoramic Viewpoints

Here are the exact details of how we spent our day in Cebu City. The timestamps and trip information were pulled from the data stored in our photos. Because of this, I confidently say this itinerary is totally doable if you follow it for your own trip.

Introduction, Context and Important Notes for This Cebu City Itinerary

During our five day Central Visayas trip, we spent one day in Bohol and four days in Cebu. The final day in Cebu was all about the city, where we wrapped things up with some scenic views and plenty of the famous local lechon.

Cebu City probably wasn’t the highlight of the trip for me since our time at Kawasan Falls and the Moalboal sardine run were definitely the best parts. Even so, we truly enjoyed our day in the city. We managed to visit over five different destinations in that single day and it felt like the perfect way to finish our adventure.

Actually, we also planned to visit the iconic historical sites like Magellan’s Cross, the Basilica del Santo Niño, and Fort San Pedro, but our local insider, our Moalboal homestay owner, tipped us off that traffic is worse on Sundays. We didn’t want to spend our entire day stuck inside the van so we chose to explore the scenic highlands where the roads were much more free flowing.

Van? Yes, we rented our own vehicle throughout our journey.

And if you are traveling with a group like ours, it is exactly what I recommend. Beyond the sheer ease and maximizing our itinerary because we skipped the public transit waits, staying together in one ride allowed every one of us to bond even more.

Here are five reasons to rent a car when exploring Cebu with friends or family.

If you are traveling solo or as a couple and want that local vibe, you might want to look into the bus (Cebu North Bus Terminal, South Bus Terminal, Cebu Interim Bus Service) and jeepney routes across the city.

You never need to worry about getting lost because tricycles are everywhere and drivers can take you exactly where you need to go. If you’re not used to haggling with drivers, you can always use apps like Grab, Joyride, or Angkas. These are the primary ride hailing services in the Philippines for booking cars or motorbikes directly from your phone.

1-Day Cebu City Itinerary Details

We kicked off our visit to Cebu City from Moalboal, a town about 90 kilometers south that takes around three hours to reach by car.

Moalboal was where we stayed for three days to go on some epic adventures throughout the southern part of the island. And it really served as a strategic home base that allowed us to make the most of our time in the area.

Kilometers away from the city, we had to wake up incredibly early that day around 3:30 in the morning. We could have started a little later, but our homestay landlord and guide warned us that heavy traffic might prevent us from seeing everything on our list.

He also encouraged us to head out early so we could reach Sirao Flower Garden right after sunrise when the temperature is still comfortable and the large tour groups from the city have not arrived yet.

We followed his advice and reached the flower farms right as they opened for the day at 7:00 am, which turned out to be a great decision.

7:00 AM → Sirao Flower Farms

It was already 6:30 or so when we arrived in Cebu City, but since Sirao Flower Garden is located up in the highlands, it took us another 30 minutes to get there. We reached the site around 7:00 am and immediately began exploring the area.

Most people think there’s only one huge flower garden in Sirao, but there are actually two of them, the “Sirao ‘Pictorial’ Garden” and the original one, “Little Amsterdam of Cebu.”

We ended up only checking out the first one (not the original farm). We could have done both, but we figured they’d be super similar, so we decided to visit one.

Anyhow, we were pleased to see so many beautiful flowers with different colors and shapes.

You can find plenty of opportunities to take photos if you enjoy photography. Two of my friends are a couple and they used parts of the garden as if it were their own prenup venue, LOL.

Aside from the flowers, you can also expect scenic views of the mountains. They are not as spectacular as the views you might see in places like Sagada or Mount Pulag in Northern Luzon, but they still add to the charm of the area.

8:00 AM → Chillin’ at Cebu Tops

From Sirao flower farms, you can easily get to Cebu Tops. I think it’s only a 20-minute drive.

When we planned our trip, though, we thought Tops would be best saved for the evening, given its reputation as a famous observation deck with stunning views of the city lights.

It made us question whether visiting during the day would be worth it, but since the site was conveniently along our route to the Temple of Leah, we decided to include it in our plans and check out the view for ourselves anyway.

When we arrived, we weren’t surprised to find the shops closed, because, again, it’s a place best visited at night. But there was a twist.

There was a live yoga session going on, which pleasantly surprised us.

It was an unexpected treat. I was completely blown away by the serene music, which made me feel like I had stepped into a piece of heaven on earth. The peaceful atmosphere was heightened by the clouds drifting almost at eye level.

Since the shops remained closed, we only spent some time at Tops to enjoy the surroundings. After taking photos, relaxing with the view, and sharing a few laughs, we headed out to our next destination.

8:30 AM → Explorin’ Temple of Leah

If you check the maps, you will see the Temple of Leah located right below Tops.

They look like they are within walking distance of each other, but no shortcut exists between them. You have to take the main road, which is about an eight to ten minute drive away.

To put it simply, Temple of Leah is a mausoleum modeled after Greek temples. Some say it is the Taj Mahal of the Philippines because both structures share a similar history. Both were built to honor the wives of the men who created them.

Because the architecture is inspired by Western styles, you might feel a unique energy when you enter the site. Its elevated location makes the experience even more special because the clouds seem to be within reach.

When we arrived, tourists from the city also started to arrive, so we did not get the full tranquil experience. I could imagine how special the moment would be if we were alone in the temple.

After roaming around quickly and taking a few photos, we left the site and proceeded to our next stop at the Cebu Taoist Temple.

9:30 AM → Vistin’ Cebu Taoist Temple

Before we reached the city proper, we dropped by the Cebu Taoist Temple located on the foothills of the highlands. 


Our driver, who also acted as our guide, mentioned that the buildings adhere to traditional architecture very strictly. He described it as a small glimpse of China right in the heart of the Philippines.

However, I could not confirm that detail during our visit because I do not have a background in Taoist architecture. But the interior definitely looked Chinese to me.

The pagodas and dragon statues reminded me of our trip to Taiwan earlier that year, although they were not as spectacular or colorful as the ones we saw there.

Anyhow, it could have been more interesting if there were an actual ceremony going on when we visited. Since there was none, we left the place right away after our quick wandering and photo ops.

10:00 AM → Lunch at House of Lechon

Actually, we had one good reason why we spent very little time at the Cebu Taoist Temple during our trip. That reason was the House of Lechon, a famous restaurant that many people recommended to us.

We knew that if we arrived early, we could beat the lunch crowd and secure a table where we could all eat together. Most importantly, arriving early meant we could eat right at noon. We also worried that the food might take a long time to arrive if other visitors placed their orders before us.

It turns out we made the right decision because we were able to eat right on time.

Of course we ate Lechon Cebu in the House of Lechon.

If it’s your first time to hear about Lechon, it is a traditional roasted pig that typically includes a savory broth poured over the meat. This specific dish is what the restaurant is famous for since it is served in the Carcar style of preparation.

As someone who is not really a fan of Lechon or much of a foodie, I cannot say if it tastes better than other versions in the country. On the other hand, my friends certainly liked the meal and did not complain as far as I can remember, so I think the experience was worth it.

Good to know: if you are the type of traveler who appreciates local flavors like my mates do, locals can help you taste the local cuisine in a more enjoyable way. This is a great way to have a well rounded experience of Cebu City.

12:00 PM → Crown Regency for the Sky Experience Adventure

Because we arrived early at the House of Lechon, our meals were served quickly and we finished dining in about an hour. Our next stop: Sky Experience Adventure on top of Crown Regency Hotel.

In a nutshell, Sky Experience Adventure is a mini amusement part that features activities designed to offer panoramic views of Cebu City alongside an adrenaline rush. 

The main attractions include the Edge Coaster, which glides around the outer rim of the building and tilts riders 45 degrees downward, and the Sky Walk Extreme, which is a guided walk along a translucent floor with no handrails.

For this activity, only my friends tried the Sky Experience activities. I passed on the opportunity because I volunteered to take their photos from the observation decks. 

I also felt I had already experienced a fair share of rides like those at an amusement park near home. So I just cheered for my friends as they screamed while gliding around the top of the building.

For some reason, there were very few tourists at the Sky Experience that day, which was surprising since it was a Sunday. I guess the small crowd was due to the timing of our visit. It was between 12 and 1 pm; other tourists were likely still eating their lunch somewhere.

2:00 PM → Pasalubong and souvenirs

After our Sky Experience, we proceeded to the hunt for pasalubong. 

I cannot remember exactly where we bought our gifts because we felt rushed at that time since we had to be at the airport before 4 pm and the worsening traffic situation made things difficult. 

We stopped at different souvenir shops along the way and bought whatever we saw.

Me and my friends bought a lot of dried mangoes, chicharon, and vacuum packed lechon. 

We saw danggit and dried squid as well, but we stuck to buying baked goods, chicharon, and dried mangoes. Personally, I do not like the smell of dried fish and my family prefers dried mangoes anyway. My friends, on the other hand, might have had their own reasons for sticking to the same items.

Anyway, according to our driver, the best way to find affordable pasalubong is by visiting Taboan Market because the prices there are much lower for items like dried fish and dried mangoes.

For biscuits like Otap, Rosquillos, and a variety of gifts, Shamrock Pasalubong Center is the place most people recommend visiting.

4:00 PM → Mactan International Airport 

Since our flight was scheduled for 6pm, we needed to arrive at the airport by 4, which marked the conclusion of our one day Cebu City trip.

Conclusion

While our day in Cebu City went well without any mishaps and the weather stayed perfect despite the rainy season, I still felt like I had not seen enough of the city. I was not surprised by that feeling, though. We definitely missed a lot, and that made me want to come back when the time is right.

I gotta see Magellan’s cross, pray and appreciate the beauty of Sto Nino Minor Basilica, and buy some authentic guitars at Allegra Guitar Factory. I might even join a tour of the factory to watch how they create such quality instruments.

Anyhow, if there’s an opportunity to visit, I’d pick the dates when the city celebrates Sinulog. It is one of the country’s most epic festivals, and the videos I have watched make it look really fun and spiritually fulfilling. The prices could be higher during that season, but experiencing Sinulog is just worth it… I believe.
